We at Hospice talk about Self Care in all of our teachings. We know that we will not have enough bandwidth left over to care for another if we don’t care for ourselves first. We believe that practicing Self Care is essential.
Truthfully, it can be hard to schedule it in. Our lives become busy with the doings of the day.
One way to practice is to take a minute throughout your day to feel grateful.
Hmm, even as I write, I can feel resistance to that. How can gratitude help with Self Care? I should be going for walks, or going to the gym, or some kind of doing. Doing, doing, doing….
When we can take a moment, a pause, and settle into the present, and then become aware of what we are grateful for, we create a bit of space between our busy thoughts and our actual experience. Even in our darkest days, there is something to be thankful for. Sometimes small things and sometimes big things.
This morning as I drove to work, I noticed that the sky was bright red as the sun was rising. My brain was busy planning my day. The road was a bit icy. I was “in my head”. Then, as I noticed the sky, I was able to intentionally put my focus there for just a few seconds. It shifted something within me. The gratitude I felt for that image in that moment…. I felt calmer.
There is still so much uncertainty in our world as we start this new year. So many things are not yet known.
Even with this though, there are moments of gratitude and aliveness that can nourish and replenish and give us more capacity to care.
We would like you to know that P.G. Hospice Society, all of us here, are so grateful for the care and support our community gives to us.
